CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Tendou Souji
Character Canon: Kamen Rider Kabuto

History: From the Kamen Rider Wiki!

AU History: Tendou naturally did not live in Tokyo or even any of the other notable settlements, being rather happy living in a nomadic tribe of less than a hundred. They rejected some practice or another of every large settlement a long time ago and tried to strike out on their own, and while they did not prosper, they survived fairly well. At least until quite recently. If there is anything notable about them, it is a cultural nostalgia for the days before humanity lost everything, and a quiet hope that there could be some way to take back what they considered the human birthright. There were occasional whispers of turning back the clock, but they never came to much.

The vast majority of the tribe was of course not destroyed by Worms in the Brave New World, but instead by a devastating Pokemon assault that took the form of a meteor strike. As far as Tendou knows, they were an unfortunate piece of collateral damage in the battles between Gigas and Caldera. He does not know who exactly pulled the trigger, but he has every intention to figure it out, and bring the guilty to justice.

Tendou was eventually brought to Caldera by his grandmother alongside two younger girls he considers his sisters, reasoning that an old woman with one foot in the coffin and three children were in no shape to continue the tribe in any shape or form. After a few rough years spent integrating, he eventually came to thrive in Caldera, his exceptional physical ability and the commanding aura of somebody with utter faith in himself impressing the natives. That said, he still ground up against them fairly frequently, as someone whose respect for tradition only ran as deep as finding out which traditional food was the tastiest.

Calderans in general do not pride themselves on their ability to communicate with Pokemon. Tendou, while born elsewhere, was much the same. They liked him well enough, of course, but he could never bring himself to be more than acquaintances to most of them, not too different from his relationship with most humans. There was, however, a single Honedge that found itself fascinated with Tendou's strength, and followed Tendou around until he had no choice but to give in and actually get to know the little sword Pokemon. This was, at they say, the start of a beautiful friendship.

When Caldera discovered Union City, Tendou made the trek as soon as he thought himself ready, believing that if he was to find his fate, it would surely be at the largest, and most central concentration of life. He has yet to find much, but he still has faith.

Canon Personality: “Grandma said this: Force the world to revolve around you, it's more fun that way.” This is the essence of Tendou Souji's personality and philosophy, somebody who truly believes that he is a treasure bestowed upon the universe and who works damned hard so he lives up to that claim.

Tendou is truly larger than life. Somebody who, on the surface, excels at everything that he does and has an ego that more than matches his boundless talent. Tendou Souji is a brilliant fighter, a peerless chef, and a complete charmer amongst other things. That said, he is also dedicated to his goals to the point of obsession, skipping university and work in favour of more training, firm in his belief that he would not only become Kamen Rider Kabuto, he was going to be the greatest of heroes. On the downside, his overbearing pride and disdain towards anything which does not aid in his quest means he has few close personal relationships, and while he does not miss them, it is something which has come back to hurt him several times.

That said, his grandmother also said “the centre of the world shall save the world.” Tendou believes in a strange sort of noblesse oblige, and for all he antagonises people he finds boring, or even people he finds interesting for the reaction, he has a strong sense of justice. He has very little patience for both the Worms and not much more for those who hurt others, especially women and children. He throws himself into battle against mankind's enemies with relish, truly believing that it is only natural for he is “the man who walks the path of heaven, destined to rule over all.” It is this trait of his that makes him bearable, occasionally even endearing, to his less eccentric companions.

While Tendou goes to great lengths for everyone, as is only befitting for somebody as great as him, the things he does for those he truly loves go above and beyond that. Anything which threatens the lives of his sisters might as well die, as simple as that, even if he has to make the entire world his enemy. So while his plans are usually inscrutable, if they become obviously and unusually reckless, you can typically guess why. While some may call that a hole in his idealism, Tendou is unlikely to change, and depending on how much he cares for your opinion, would respond either by saying that since he is the centre of the world, he gets to make the rules, or that a justice which cannot protect his loved ones is not much of one.

As an aside, the after his family and his battle, the thing he considers most important is cooking, and food in general. He is also amazingly competitive, letting few challenges past him, and even fewer stand a chance at winning at all. This of course leads to at least one amazingly ridiculous cooking battle.

All in all, Tendou Souji is a fascinating specimen. He is far too egotistical to be considered a straightforward hero, and yet too competent and driven to be the kind of joke character his type usually is.

AU Deviation: Tendou is obviously not a Kamen Rider fighting Worms, and is especially not the Kamen Rider, but rather one of many Enlightened and trainers, with many of them being stronger than him. This undeniable fact means that he is, at least when beginning his journey, less likely to start talking about how amazing he is. That said, he still believes firmly that he has the potential to become nothing less than the next Saviour, and walks that path with a firm determination.

Tendou is also no longer as much of a loner as he is as Kabuto. While he can still be withdrawn from what he considers the boring trivialities of ordinary people, he has a close bond with his Pokemon, and since his relationship with them is always on display (as opposed to his family who he tries to keep away from battle) it may make him seem a bit more personable. That said, he is also not terribly interested in keeping a large collection of Pokemon. After all, the sun crosses the sky alone.

It is also worth noting that while he talks a big game about being the next Saviour, there is no imminent threat against the world on the level of the Worm, which can make his claims more difficult to substantiate. He has utter faith that he will change the world, but is still unsure what exactly that entails, and at least in the beginning will be content to take on any adventure that catches his interest. If there is one thing he leans toward, however, it is the recovery of lost science and technology, as that is the most direct route to strengthening humanity as a whole.

Canon Abilities: Tendou is basically amazing at everything. He is good enough at fighting that he can take down a common thug with a knife without disturbing the bowl of tofu in his hand, can not only challenge but defeat professional chefs, will happily take on amateur soccer teams single-handedly and hold his own, speaks several languages well etc.; but they are not the abilities we are here for.

As long as he has the Rider Belt on hand, Tendou may summon the Kabuto Zecter and transform into Kamen Rider Kabuto, a mighty warrior clad in armour. As Kabuto, he is many times stronger, faster, and tougher than an ordinary human can hope to be, and is equipped with the Kabuto Kunai Gun, which in spite of what its name says, is not just a kunai and a gun, but also an axe.

While the armoured form of Kabuto is impressive, he may Cast Off to expunge its outermost layer of defence in exchange for increased speed and the ability to Clock Up. Clock Up is arguably the most important ability of the Rider System, allowing all equipped Riders to increase their speeds to absurd levels, to the point where from their perspective, even falling rain slows to a crawl. In this form he may also use his finisher, Rider Kick, a powerful electrically charged kick attack.

The Clock Up System is activated by tapping a button on the side of the Rider Belt, granting the Rider hypersonic speed which is necessary to fight Worms, which organically possess a similar ability. The Clock Up system has no usage limit, ending only when the Rider stops moving (causing the Belt to announce Clock Over) with little preventing the Rider from starting again. In fact, an alternate world's Kabuto had his Clock Up System malfunction, causing him to be permanently trapped in a high speed state, unable to stop moving for humanly perceivable time frames. While a Rider in Clock Up seems to possess increased destructive power thanks to the simple law of F=MA, capable of gouging holes in reinforced concrete, they quite noticeably do not cause sonic booms with every movement or seem to overheat for reasons unknown.

He also owns the Kabuto Extender, a motorcycle which is built to withstand the Clock Up System and may also Cast Off to become a vehicular battering ram.

However, Kamen Rider Kabuto is at his most powerful when he equips the Hyper Zecter to Hyper Cast Off to become Hyper Kabuto, which is not only superior in every way to ordinary Kabuto, may also Hyper Clock Up, an ability with two different effects. The first is a vastly improved Clock Up, speeding its user to the point where Clocked Up enemies seem to be moving at ordinary speeds. The second, more powerful, but less predictable use is when it bends time itself, allowing Kabuto to travel back in time, its most notable use being to hand off the Rider Belt to his younger self in an alternate timeline. The power of Hyper Clock Up is such that even when the Hyper Zecter is destroyed, Kabuto may simply summon it from another point in time anyway.

More mundanely, Hyper Kabuto may also call upon and use the Perfect Zecter, which contrary to the other Zecters, is not a transformation tool but rather a powerful sword which gives Hyper Kabuto far more firepower, especially after he takes ownership of the Zecters of several other Riders.

Enlightened Abilities: Tendou Souji is a God of War, and is a Bug/Fighting/Steel type. He is also a transcendent cook.

He begins as a fairly ordinary Enlightened of the Fighting type, primarily possessing quick martial arts moves beyond what any ordinary human could pull off. While he has not fully awakened to his power, he is the type of fighter to heartily abuse high speed attacks like Bullet Punch.

Upon evolving for the first time, the features of his other types begin to set in, and he begins to be covered in a thin red and silver biometallic carapace. While he is not likely to become noticeably stronger or tougher immediately, he does enjoy making a show of Iron Defence and Swords Dance, which manifest themselves as visible mass on his body. He also becomes significantly faster through gaining access to the rough equivalent of the Clock Up System. This manifests as a gradual increase in speed, akin to Ninjask's Speed Boost, that eventually makes him on par with even the fastest of Flying-types. His speediness gives him the opportunity to use bigger, nastier finishing moves, including but not limited to a powerful, electrified kick.

His second evolution marks his ascension to becoming the God of the Sun, or so Tendou would like you to believe. He gains rudimentary wings that while useless for sustained flight, do allow him to increase his jumping strength significantly and control his trajectory to some extent, ensuring that no enemy stays out of his reach. He should also become faster again, which manifests itself as seeming like there are several of him on the field at once if he so desires it, in what should be an offensive application of Double Team, his close range attacks looking as though they are coming from several different directions at once. His absolute peak speed is not something which can be maintained, so his afterimages are not of much use defensively except for limiting counter-attack options.

He also carries an Electric-type pistol. Useful for keeping Flying-types off his back.

Starter Pokémon: A Honedge. Also known as his friend, partner, and mirror into his soul, Kagami

SAMPLES

What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?
Some of them are loyal partners of humanity, some of them care little for us. The former group must be valued like treasures, the latter should stay out of my way.

What do you feel your role in your city is?
I will surpass the Saviour, naturally.

What do you seek for humanity’s future?
Peace, prosperity, love and justice. Humanity itself is my people, so of course they will have nothing but the best.

To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
You couldn't possibly imagine it.

What would you say the most important occupation is within your city?
Apart from whatever it is I'm doing? The chef. Grandma one said that flavour connects one person to another. Good food is the cornerstone of prosperity.

What does the story of the Savior mean to you?
It's a target. She saved humanity, but gave away far too much. Next time, I'll do better.

What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?
Pride and talent, naturally, but drive is the most important one of all.

What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?
Those who can recognise what I will become and wish to walk alongside me on this path, those are the greatest companions for someone like me.

What do you think your Pokémon respect most about you?
My pride, my talent, and my drive, of course. Like I said, they're the most important traits a man can have.

The gods of old have returned. How would you be judged if you were chosen as a representative of humanity?
Does it matter? I do not need any gods old or new to judge me. I forge my own path, and will become my own god.

A human has attacked a wild Pokémon who retaliates in defense. How do you respond and whom do you defend?
There are as many reasons for every action as there are people in the world. I will protect whoever I see as righteous, although I will probably try to keep anyone from dying.

You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies; upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home?
Do you ask the sun how it rises in the morning and sets for the night? I just do so.

What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?
My grandma once said, “Tendou Souji is a man who shall walk the path of heaven and rule over everything.” Everything I do is to live up to that.

You plunge into the depths of ruins of an ancient civilization. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom?
People become stronger through adventure, so the journey is more important than the result. Everything I get will be useful somehow.

When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why?
There are as many sorts of Pokemon as there are Pokemon in the world. It is impossible to tell what I will do unless I know what it will do.

What do you do to ensure we never again awaken the wrath of the gods upon humanity?
Why think about the worst case scenario? If you spent more time being the best man you could rather than fretting over myths and legends, we wouldn't have to worry about this legend.

What strengths make you most qualified for your role within your city?
Do you ask the sun why it can be the sun? It should be obvious.

In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable?
My grandma once said, “children are the world's treasures, to hurt them is the greatest sin in the world.”

No Enlightened chooses their abilities - and not all are Enlightened. What type abilities would you most desire to manifest and why?
My grandma once said, “if I wish for it, fate will always be my ally.” I've wished for it, and any ability I obtain will surely be the best fit for me.

What area do you seek to explore? The peaceful forest, in search of new, previously overlooked discoveries; the uncharted caves, in search of the unknown; or the wildest of mountain terrain, in search of danger, adventure, and thrills?
The last piece of advice from my grandmother for today: “If you're going to go on an adventure, make it a big adventure.” Anything less than the greatest is too little for me.
